Most travelers pass through Lima on the way to somewhere else. Give it two days, and it earns its own place on the trip. Lima is one of the world’s great food cities, where centuries of migration meet the cold Pacific, and you can eat your way from a hole-in-the-wall ceviche counter to restaurants at the top of the world’s best lists.
Its historic center, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, still holds the grand facades of its colonial and republican eras, while Barranco trades them for street art, sea cliffs, and old mansions turned into galleries and bars. Push a little further and you reach Caral, the oldest known city in the Americas, built around the same time as Egypt’s pyramids.
